The Emergency Department underwent a significant renovation to enhance patient care and improve efficiency during high peak occupancy.
Existing administrative space was converted into an 18-bed observation unit, designed to accommodate patients who require short-term care before being discharged or transferred to an extended stay facility. This new unit has helped alleviate overcrowding in the emergency department and improve care standards.
To optimize patient observation and workflow, the design team implemented a dual clinical pod design. This configuration, which features two dedicated nurse stations and shared support spaces, was made possible by carefully subdividing the available space to achieve maximum visibility from the nurse’s core. The use of digital scanning technology played a crucial role in identifying existing building structures, streamlining the design and construction process.
In addition to functional improvements, the renovation also focused on creating a more welcoming and less clinical environment. Calming finishes, a faux-wood ceiling, and creative wayfinding elements were incorporated into the design.
By involving hospital staff in the design process and utilizing innovative technologies, the project team was able to overcome challenges related to limited space and maintain cost control. The redesigned emergency department is now better equipped to provide high-quality care to patients in need.
